What Is A Suction Drainage Ball?

A suction drainage ball, also called a silicone drainage bulb or negative-pressure drainage reservoir, is a soft medical silicone component used in closed drainage assemblies. The bulb is compressed before use. As it returns to its original shape, it creates negative pressure that helps draw fluid into the reservoir through the connected tube.

The part may look simple, but its performance depends on silicone grade, wall thickness, rebound behavior, connector sealing, valve design, and leak control. If the bulb is too stiff, too thin, or poorly sealed, the suction force and fluid collection performance can become unstable.

Silicone Drainage Ball Custom Manufacturing Service

Fecision manufactures custom silicone suction drainage balls around the final device assembly. We review the reservoir volume, compression force, rebound speed, connector structure, tube fit, valve interface, graduation marks, and packaging plan before tooling.

For medical device programs, we can support material selection, LSR injection molding or compression molding review, in-house tooling, clean handling, inspection, and production release. We also help align the drainage bulb with related tubing, caps, connectors, and packaging requirements.

How A Silicone Drainage Ball Works

The bulb is squeezed by hand to expel air. After the cap or valve is closed, the elastic silicone body tries to recover its original shape. This recovery creates negative pressure inside the reservoir.

Stable suction depends on the balance between softness and rebound. The silicone wall must be flexible enough to compress, strong enough to recover, and sealed enough to hold negative pressure during use.

Compressed bulb → elastic recovery → negative pressure

Reservoir design, connector sealing, and material recovery must work together before the assembly can hold suction reliably.

Suction Drainage Ball Design Options

Custom designs are selected around reservoir volume, device layout, tube routing, handling feel, and fluid collection requirements.

Reservoir

Round Or Oval Drainage Bulbs

Soft bulb shapes can be designed for hand compression, stable rebound, and compact placement in a drainage kit.

Connector

Custom Tube Interfaces

Connector diameter, barb shape, cap structure, and tube fit can be adjusted around the target assembly.

Valve

Valve And Cap Integration

One-way valve, plug, cap, and port details can be reviewed to reduce leakage and simplify handling.

Marking

Graduation And Custom Marking

Graduation marks, logo, orientation marks, and color features can be reviewed for molded or secondary marking.

Suction Drainage Ball Manufacturing Process

Drainage reservoirs need mold control, elastic recovery control, sealing control, and inspection support from the first sample stage.

Suction Drainage Ball Design Factors

Small changes in geometry can affect suction, leakage, assembly, and user handling. These items should be confirmed before tooling.

Design Factor What To Confirm Why It Matters
Reservoir volume Target capacity, shape, wall thickness, and size limits Controls collection volume, compression feel, and device packaging space
Negative pressure behavior Compression force, rebound speed, leak target, and test method Determines whether the bulb can hold suction consistently after compression
Connector interface Tube ID/OD, barb design, cap size, valve structure, and assembly fit Prevents leakage, loose assembly, tube pull-off, or handling problems
Material and packaging Medical-grade silicone, color, documentation, sterilization review, and pack format Supports device validation, production release, and supply chain requirements

Cleanroom Production For Silicone Drainage Balls

Suction drainage balls are used in closed medical drainage assemblies, so the silicone reservoir, connector area, cap interface, and packaging condition all need controlled handling before release.

Fecision can support ISO Class 7 cleanroom production for silicone drainage bulb projects where clean handling, particle control, visual inspection, leak review, and packaging records are required.

Quality control

Quality Control For Silicone Drainage Balls

For a drainage reservoir, quality control must cover more than appearance. The silicone body, connector, cap, valve, and molded wall must work together to keep a reliable negative-pressure path.

  • Material traceability and hardness review before production
  • Visual inspection for flash, tearing, deformation, and surface defects
  • Connector fit, cap fit, leak resistance, and rebound behavior checks when required
  • Packaging review for individual packing, kit assembly, labeling, and shipment
